Wisdom Teeth Extraction

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop, and usually, appear or start to erupt between the ages of 16 and 25.  Most adults have four, but it is possible to have more or fewer than four.

Why do they need to be removed?

Often when wisdom teeth develop there is not enough room in the patient’s mouth for them to erupt into proper occlusion.  Therefore they are referred to as being impacted. An impacted wisdom tooth can create multiple problems which can include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Infection
  • Development of cyst
  • Damage to adjacent teeth
  • Possible nerve damage

These are all indications for the removal of the wisdom teeth.  It is often recommended that the wisdom teeth are removed at an early age before any of the above problems develop.

What happens during surgery?

You have the option of the type of anesthesia which can include local, nitrous oxide (Laughing gas) or IV sedation/General Anesthesia.  For most wisdom teeth extractions General Anesthesia is recommended for the comfort of the patient.  During the procedure, the patient is monitored using the state of the art equipment.

What happens after surgery?

Following surgery, you may experience some swelling and mild discomfort which is part of the normal healing process.  Ice packs will help with the swelling, and pain medication prescribed by Dr Solano will help manage the discomfort. You will be given verbal instructions as well as written post-operative instruction (available under tab labeled forms).
